Payment for public transportation has been made easier due to the special cards that are offered by the RTA known as the Nol Card.

The UNITED ARAB EMIRATES is a fascinating country that welcomes people from all countries and communities. In today’s world public transportation is the perfect option to travel. Below are some popular mode of transportation in UAE that one should be aware of while travelling.


The most popular mode of public transportation in UAE as it is available almost all over UAE in an affordable price compared to other major cities. The taxis in UAE have a fare meter which calculates the amount to need to pay for your journey. You can easily find taxis in several taxi stands and around various stations. This makes it easier for people to find taxi or they can also stop a taxi in a street. Taxies are regulated and maintained by the road and transport authority [RTA]. Several companies have organized taxi service in the UAE, with professional drivers. You can also find an app called – "Smart Taxi" that has been introduced by the RTA to help you book the nearest taxi to your location, using your smartphone.


Buses are also very important for the public transportation network as it’s a great way of connecting people to their desired destinations. The biggest bus networks are in Dubai and Abu Dhabi- Dubai has 112 routes and Abu Dhabi has 75. The bus networks in the other emirates mainly consist of buses connecting the emirates with each other. The essential thing is buses are much affordable. You can purchase a ticket by paying directly or by using a NoI card.

Metro, Mono and Tram

Dubai is the most developed city in the UAE in terms of the rail network. It has the Metro, Monorail, and Tram available in the city. It is the only city that has all three options. The Metro rail network is driverless, it helps you visit your desired destination fast and efficiently. It runs through important areas and connects major points such as airport, hotels, and malls. The Palm Monorail is a private transport service. Its designed for the people visiting the Palm Jumeirah. Dubai Tram was the most awaited project of the city. It is a rail service with integrated public transport and runs through populated zones. The Tram is connected to both Monorail and Metro that enables the visitor to switch between the modes of transportation easily.

Payment Mode for Public Transport in UAE

Payment for public transportation has been made easier due to the special cards that are offered by the RTA known as the Nol Card. The Card is offered in four different types- Red, Silver, Gold, and Blue which one can opt for depending on his/her frequency of travelling. Sharjah offers the Sayer Card which can be used while travelling in buses and has only one type. All these smart cards can be purchased at the ticket counters, RTA offices, from any participating sales agent. This card can purchased online.
